Multiply Your Odds of Job Search Success

Job seekers often make one of two errors when using job boards. They focus on too few or use too many. In either case, they seldom achieve the results they need and deserve. What’s a better strategy? Selective multiplication. It involves using a small number of the right sites to multiply your chances of success.

Research indicates that job boards are among the very best ways to find a new or better job. Better than one-out-of-every-five openings is filled by an applicant who used a job board. Only securing a referral from an employee of the company gets better results.

But, here’s the rub. There are more than 100,000 job boards currently operating in the U.S., so it’s hard to know how many and which ones to use. You can waste a lot of time lurching from one site to another looking for opportunities that are right for you and you can miss your dream job if you focus on too few sites to see the full extent of the job market.

That’s why “selective multiplication is so important.” It significantly increases your odds of success by focusing your job search on both the right number and the right kinds of sites. It enables you to be efficient and effective at the same time.

The strategy is expressed in the following formula: 3N + 2G + 1W = 1D

where:

1D stands for the one Dream Job for you.

It is the opening that perfectly matches your experience, talent and interests.

3N stands for three niche or specialty sites.

    one that focuses on your career field;
  • one that focuses on the industry in which you have experience or want to work; and
  • one that focuses in the geographic region where you live or want to.

These sites enable you to probe fully those segments of the job market that are right for you.

2G stands for two general purpose sites.

These sites post openings in all or most professions, crafts, and trades, industries and locations. They give you access to the full breadth of the job market.

1W stands for one wildcard site.

Wildcard sites include those operated by any of the following:

  • A local job club;
  • Your college or graduate school alumni organization;
  • Your college fraternity or sorority; or
  • Your state department of labor.

In order to take full advantage of these sites, however, you have to use them in the right way. As a minimum, you should:

  • Sign up for their free job alert so you are always on top of the opportunities they are posting;
  • Read the articles, blogs and other information posted on the site so your job search skills are up-to-date and fully developed; and
  • Participate in any discussion forum or chat on the site so you are always building out your network of contacts.

The key to job search success is knowing how best to spend your limited time and energy. One of the most effective techniques is “selective multiplication” – using the right number of job boards with the right access to the job market. It will increase the odds of your finding the right job for you.

Invest in Yourself

There’s plenty of free job search and career advice on the Web. But, if that’s all it takes to be successful, we wouldn’t still have so many Americans out-of-work or out of interest in their jobs.

The reality is that too much of what you find online is incomplete (a short article here, a blog post there), out-of-date (posted before the Great Recession changed everything) or just plain wrong. So, if you’re looking for strategies and tips, tactics and techniques that will actually work in today’s tough economy, make an investment in yourself. Get one or more of the books below:

A Multitude of Hope: A Novel About Rediscovering the American Dream. This modern-day epic traces the journeys of three out-of-work professionals searching for answers in today’s seemingly nonsensical job market. Along the way, they discover the secret to “career security” and the pathway to real and lasting success.

The Career Fitness Workbook. This book introduces a complete regimen of activities that will help you successfully compete for and hang onto the job of your dreams. Think of it as “the habits of highly effective career activists.”

The Career Activist Republic. This blockbuster of a book provides a provocative yet positive assessment of the changing world of work in the American economy and describes an innovative strategy that will enable you to avoid the pitfalls and capture the opportunities in this new environment.

The Success Matrix: Wisdom from the Web on How to Get Hired and Not Be Fired. This anthology collects the best of Peter Weddle’s columns on job search and career success. It is the only book you’ll find that provides a candid and totally up-to-date look at how to get and stay ahead in today’s workplace.

Recognizing Richard Rabbit. This fable for adults will entertain and delight you and help you out of the boxes that keep you from becoming the champion inside you. It is a novel and engaging way to recognize the talented person you are meant to be.
